“Unbroken: The Untold Story of Shen Yun” succeeds despite the Chinese communist regime’s multi-decade campaign of threats, cancellations, and intimidation.

On April 22, the premiere of Unbroken: The Untold Story of Shen Yun took place in Toronto, drawing a crowd of cast members, dancers, filmmakers, and supporters eager to celebrate a production company that continues to expand globally despite a multi-decade campaign by the Chinese communist regime to sabotage its performances.
What was anticipated as a behind-the-scenes documentary quickly revealed itself as a profound exploration of the challenges faced by the performers of Shen Yun, who train rigorously while confronting significant threats to their artistic expression. Canadian journalist Scarlett Grace notes in her write-up of the film’s Toronto release, the recent cancellation of six Shen Yun shows at the city’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts earlier in April, following a single email threat—an unprecedented decision that has sparked serious questions about foreign influence and the venue’s “abundance of caution.”
China monitor, Probe International’s Patricia Adams called the cancellations “disturbingly similar” to CCP tactics used inside China to silence dissent, warning that yielding to such intimidation erodes public trust, artistic freedom, and Canadian sovereignty. As Joel Chipkar of the Falun Dafa Association noted, it represents an assault on safety and the artistic community. Despite over 150 false bomb threats worldwide, Shen Yun’s 2026 tour — its largest ever, with eight troupes across five continents — continues, preserving a vision of “China before communism” that the regime fears.
In a striking investigative segment, the film follows protesters who appear to have been financially incentivized to disrupt performances, echoing claims made by The New York Times—claims that the documentary vehemently disputes, suggesting they are part of a broader campaign orchestrated by the CCP.
The documentary’s timing feels especially urgent in a world where socialism and authoritarian tactics are gaining ground. Grace recognizes the same patterns of cultural erasure and suppression that have targeted Shen Yun in her work with the Iranian community.
Interviews she conducted with the film’s stars on the red carpet revealed their resilience and passion — dance and performance as resistance and cultural preservation. By separating “China” from the “Party,” Shen Yun undermines the CCP’s state-sanctioned versions of Chinese culture and the Party’s positioning as the sole guardian of Chinese civilization—a threat the regime cannot abide but has not been able to stop.
