Up the Yangtze

The Three Gorges dam is central to the award-winning documentary Up the Yangtze by Canadian filmmaker Yung Chang. Chosen as one of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Top Ten, Up the Yangtze is a heart-wrenching protrayal of a family affected by the Three Gorges dam.

Bravo to Yung Chang for recording an important part of modern Chinese history that the Chinese government would prefer to skip. This is an outstanding film.

Still Life

(Still Life opens on Friday, January 25th in Manhattan and Toronto)

Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhang-ke also chose the Three Gorges dam as a backdrop for his 2006 feature film, Still Life. Lauded by the New York Times as “among the most strikingly gifted filmmakers working today,” Jia Zhang-ke has created a moving and complex work that took the Gold Lion in Venice in 2006.
Shot in Fenjie, a doomed town ultimately flooded by the rising waters of the Three Gorges reservoir, Still Life tells the stories of Sanming, a miner, and Shen Hong, a nurse, as they search for their missing spouses amid the chaos and destruction of the world’s largest dam-building project.
