New Delhi should use Beijing’s own scientists—and its record of dam disasters—to spotlight the risks of the Medog project.

China’s Medog project on the Yarlung Tsangpo—just upstream of the Indian border—is not a conventional dam.
High-profile geostrategist and author Brahma Chellaney argues it is a “water bomb” capable of starving downstream floodplains of silt, boosting Beijing’s leverage over lean-season flows, and, more urgently, a super dam sited on an active fault in one of Earth’s most unstable mountain belts. Chinese state-linked geologists themselves have warned of fractured bedrock, landslide-prone slopes, and reservoir-induced seismicity. But India, writes Chellaney, has met this with years of quiet “demarches” that changed nothing.
Chellaney now urges New Delhi to abandon silence. Publicize Chinese scientific evidence at multilateral forums, demand full technical disclosure and an independent international inspection, and treat Beijing’s likely refusal as proof of risk.
He rejects a giant Indian counter-dam on the Siang [the Upper Siang Multipurpose Project (USMP)] as a false solution: the two structures, he notes, would sit too close in the same seismic zone, warning times would be measured in minutes, and a flood-control reservoir would not be able to absorb a catastrophic breach while also generating power.
The “durable Indian response,” he says, is “layered resilience” without matching mega-engineering. This includes autonomous satellite and radar monitoring of the site, automated river sensors at the border, restored wetlands and floodways that give the Brahmaputra room to spread, and sustained diplomatic pressure that shifts China’s own dam-failure history and ignored scientific warnings to the centre of the global debate.
“The super dam may well stand as a monument to China’s ambition,” concludes Chellaney but “it should not become a tombstone for downstream millions.”
