The third instalment in The Daily Wire series, “American Maoists: Warnings From The Cultural Revolution,” co-authored by activist Xi Van Fleet, a survivor of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, and scholar Sasha Gong,
What happens when revolutionary movements turn against traditional femininity? The authors explore this question through the lens of women under radical Marxist regimes, particularly in China.
They travel back to the era of Mao Zedong whose rise to power denounced feminine qualities, calling instead on women to abandon their traditional roles as lovers, wives, and mothers for revolutionary ideals. Under Marxist ideology, “beauty turned to beast.”
The Red Guard movement, which saw young girls transform into torturers and killers, exemplified the extreme consequences of this defeminization. Authors Van Fleet and Gong reflect on their own experiences growing up in a culture that pushed them to become “Iron Girls”:
Sadly, defeminization left deep scars on the women of our generation, eroding many of the traditional Chinese virtues of womanhood: tenderness, modesty, nurturing, grace, and devotion to family. Our generation, unlike our Western counterparts, grew up without dreams of a fairytale love story or a perfect wedding.
Now, as they observe similar trends in America, they ask: are we witnessing a new wave of defeminization among young women, particularly those seeking identity through radical means? With body modifications and a rejection of conventional beauty, are these expressions of rebellion reshaping societal values? As these trends unfold, the authors warn of the potential consequences for the fabric of society and future generations.
