Excessive spending that allows Chinese officials to put on an oversized Expo in Shanghai — the most expensive event in history — also allowed them to engage in monumental nation-threatening efforts, such as building the Three Gorges dam, says Gordon Chang in his weekly column for Forbes magazine. “The Three Gorges Dam, built at a cost of $37.2 billion, is the world’s most expensive engineering feat and an environmental disaster.” Worse, he says, “the $62 billion South-to-North Water Diversion Project will dwarf the dam in both scale and detrimental ecological effect.” Read the full story here.
