Beijing: A Chinese activist left paralysed following a severe beating remained in intensive care Monday after an operation to stabilize his spinal injuries. Sunday’s operation has left Fu Xiancai stable enough to be transported and doctors are optimistic that he will one day be able to sit upright in a wheelchair. But his prognosis remains poor and it is unlikely that Fu, who was left paralysed from the neck down, will ever regain full mobility. Speaking to Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa on Monday, Fu’s son, Fu Bin said his father was conscious, but finding it difficult to speak. Fu Xiancai underwent the two-hour procedure Sunday after the German government agreed to foot the 60,000 yuan (7,500 dollar) bill. The hospital in Yichang city, in China’s central Hubei province, had previously refused to operate because Fu’s family could not afford to pay the costs. According to Fu Bin, his father is to stay in intensive care for another week while doctors have not ruled out the possibility of another operation. The elder Fu was a long-time campaigner for Three Gorges residents who say they were cheated out of compensation and housing when they were resettled from the area. The June 8 attack occurred just minutes after Fu was questioned by local police over an interview he gave to German television about his campaign. Fu’s family meanwhile are convinced that local authorities were behind the attack. The activist had already received several threats warning him to stop his campaign.
