A London-based insurance broker, Willis Group Holdings, has been awarded a two-year contract as the insurance consultant for the Three Gorges project, according to Joy Shaw, correspondent for MarketWatch in Shanghai.
According to the company’s press release, Willis Chairman and CEO, Joe Plumeri, who visited the dam site last year, praised the project as “one of the greatest engineering feats of the twenty-first century.”
If completed as planned, the Three Gorges power plant on the Yangtze river in Hubei province will have 32 turbines of 700 MW capacity operational by 2011.
A leading insurance broker for the energy sector, utilities, and construction industry in China, Willis replaces New York-based Marsh & McLennan as the Three Gorges project’s insurance consultant. Neither company has disclosed the reason for the change or the details of their contracts.
