75,000 people to be relocated as part of Longtan Power Station project

Longtan Power Station will be second in size to the Three Gorges dam but officials say it will require far fewer people to be relocated.

Longtan Power Station, to be built along Guangxi’s Hongshui River, will be second in size to the Three Gorges Dam but require far fewer people to be relocated, officials say.  According to Chen Fei, general manager of the Guangxi Longtan Hydropower Development Co., the relocation will involve 75,125 residents beginning this May, and it is expected to finish by 2008, reported the Zhongguo Xinwen She (China News Service) on March 30. In addition, the relocation will involve 10 counties in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and Guizhou province, which will have to relocate the most people 42,995. Total investment will exceed 4.6 billion yuan (US$55.56 million), the article noted.
