Five workers die in dam-site accident

March 6, 2002

Five workers were killed yesterday morning in an accident at the Three Gorges dam site, China News Service (Zhongguo xinwen she) reported today.

Witnesses said about 16 workers were pouring concrete at the construction site when a big mound of earth collapsed onto them from a high slope above, burying six of them. One of the men, Liu Yong, was pulled out alive, and his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The victims were all rural labourers from Hubei province. Two of the dead were brothers from Suizhou city, Hubei, the news agency said.

Chinese media have estimated that about 40 workers died in construction-related accidents at the Three Gorges dam site in 1999 and 2000. More recent figures are not available.
