Xiaolangdi hydro customers in short supply

Three Gorges Probe

September 25, 2001

Sept. 8, 2001 – Zhongguo shuili bao (China Water Resources News) published by the Ministry of Water Resources in Beijing, reports that the Xiaolangdi dam on the Yellow River has cut back power production to just five hours per day due to a lack of electricity demand in coal-rich Henan Province. In addition, the project authority has been ordered to curtail hydropower generation in order to store water for irrigation, following this summer’s water shortages along the Yellow River. Under the circumstances, the project authority is concerned about its ability to pay back its loans, totalling around US$1.5 billion, most of which came from foreign financial organizations.
