China damned over floods
(August 23, 2008) As Mekong River floodwaters in Laos and Thailand recede, indignation with China for its lack of transparency on upstream dam developments is on the rise. China has recently pursued a friendly policy of economic integration with Southeast Asian neighbors but in relation to Mekong River development it has taken what many see as a covetous and less than neighborly approach.
China’s Three Gorges dam, by the numbers
‘Ultimately the life of this dam is very limited, unless they build other dams to prevent it from silting up,’ said Jennifer Turner, coordinator of the China Environment Forum at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington.
