Following President Xi Jinping’s purge of senior generals, Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli, sources claim the Central Military Commission (CMC) of China is facing widespread resistance within the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), as grassroots troops ignore or only passively acknowledge directives aimed at reinforcing loyalty to the regime.

The Epoch Times reports sources have indicated that the removal of career officers Zhang and Liu has led to dissatisfaction and a breakdown in the command-and-control system, with many military personnel openly mocking Chinese leader Xi Jinping. One source referred to military personnel openly mocking Xi (using the nickname “baozi,” which translates to “steamed stuffed bun”), and privately calling him names unthinkable in earlier years.

“Once orders from the top are no longer seen as absolute, any talk of war mobilization loses its foundation—no one would risk their life for you,” a family member of an active-duty officer told The Epoch Times, in reference to President Xi Jinping’s 2027 timeline for PLA readiness regarding Taiwan.

The Epoch Times points to multiple sources that warn if the regime continues its current course without addressing the backlash, it risks losing effective command over the country’s roughly two million active-duty troops.
