‘A Trudeau problem’? How India’s ties with Canada fell apart over murder of separatist leader

Experts say neither country is expected to back down after strong language used in recent exchanges, tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats.

Summary

Relations between India and Canada have deteriorated following the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil in June 2023.

Tensions escalated when Canada accused Indian officials of being involved in activities threatening public safety and expelled six Indian diplomats. Canada is alleging it has evidence of Indian officials reporting on Khalistani activist immigrants and of a link between an organised crime group, called the Bishnoi gang, and the Indian government.

In response, India expelled six Canadian diplomats and rejected the accusations, calling them preposterous and politically motivated.

The situation has led to a diplomatic standoff, with both sides unlikely to back down soon. The Canadian government’s stance is seen as a political move to appease its large Sikh diaspora, while India views the crisis as a problem specific to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Experts suggest that international pressure, including from the G7 and the US, may be applied to India to de-escalate the situation.
