This Friday, New York-based publisher, Bouden House, in collaboration with the American Civil Archives, and the China Action Essay Editing Committee, will host the launch of new works by Bouden. The roster of fresh titles includes a revised edition of Deng Xiaoping in 1989.

Deng Xiaoping in 1989 戴晴 著 by the iconic investigative journalist Dai Qing, is an account of the events that led to the tragedy of Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989. Following the 35th anniversary of the June 4 massacre, the new and revised edition of Deng Xiaoping in 1989 represents a timely reminder of the worldview that has shaped the China of today.

Open to the public, the hosts have invited authors, scholars, critics, and New York’s public intellectuals to join the launch to celebrate and discuss. A book-signing event will be held afterwards.

Since its establishment in the summer of 2020, Bouden House has published nearly 200 books and periodicals by independent-thinking contributors in the Chinese-speaking world. Bouden’s wide-ranging focus encompasses China’s current political affairs, economy, culture and art, philosophy, humanities and history. A considerable number of Bouden’s publications are collected by high-profile U.S. university libraries, including Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, etc., as well as the Library of Congress. All published books and periodicals are distributed globally via the Amazon platform (with the exception of mainland China).

Banned from publishing or speaking publicly in China, Dai Qing will not be in attendance herself in New York for the launch. As a Probe International Fellow of 30 years, we whole-heartedly support ongoing efforts to circulate Dai’s voice and work to the world at large in her absence. Patricia Adams, Probe International’s executive director, will be speaking remotely at the launch on June 28 in honour of this new edition of Deng Xiaoping in 1989.

From the press release for the revised edition of Deng Xiaoping in 1989:

On the 30th anniversary of the June 4th Incident, “Deng Xiaoping in 1989” was released in an “unfinalized” state. At that time, Deng Xiaoping, Chen Yun, Li Xiannian, Yang Shangkun, and Li Peng had all passed away one by one. Five years later, Wang Ruilin, Bao Tong and other insiders who were involved in the incident also left one by one. Documents, investigations, archives…all the first-hand materials that recorded the facts of that year are still a long way from being open to the public. Even the author of the mixed truth and falsehood of “The Truth of China’s June 4th” (Tiananmen Paper) Zhang Liang is still shrouded in mystery – this book “Deng Xiaoping in 1989”, which was released to remember the 35th anniversary of the bloodshed of civilians on the long street, is still trudging on the long journey of “unfinalized”.
