Summary

An undercover agent for China’s secret police, who goes by the name Eric, recently fled his homeland and sought refuge in Australia. After an assignment went awry, Eric decided his time working for China’s Political Security Protection Bureau, a secretive unit of China’s Ministry of Public Security, was up. At great risk, Eric revealed his identity to the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) in Canberra to expose what he describes as one of the most feared parts of China’s intelligence apparatus, similar to historical intelligence agencies like the KGB, the Stasi, and the Gestapo.

In this interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Four Corners program, Eric shares the secrets he has guarded for years, marking the first instance of someone from China’s secret police speaking publicly.

For 15 years as an intelligence operative, Eric followed orders to infiltrate pro-democracy organizations and target dissidents ranging from YouTubers to cartoonists critical of the Xi Jinping regime in various countries, including Canada, India, Thailand, and Australia. His mission each time was to gain the confidence of dissidents and lure them to countries where they could be kidnapped and sent back to China to be dealt with according to the government’s wishes.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. says it has seen hundreds of secret documents and correspondence that back up Eric’s allegations. In a separate report, the ABC claims Chinese authorities have used anti-corruption campaigns to return more than 12,000 alleged fugitives to China in the past decade.
