China’s State Environmental Protection Administration has hit out at local authorities in Beijing over their approval of a controversial waste-treatment plant near a populated residential area, two days after a rare protest by hundreds of residents in the city centre.
The 750-million-yuan incinerator project was planned by Haidian district to ease mounting complaints by people from at least two villages and eight residential areas over the unbearable stench from a landfill. Construction was scheduled to start in March in order for the plant to be operational before the Olympic Games next August.
The project was delayed after more than 1,000 residents took to the streets on World Environment Day to demonstrate in front of SEPA’s headquarters in Xicheng district.
