A petition signed by international luminaries such as Nobel Prize winner Desmond Tutu, the renowned American academic Noam Chomsky and former French Ambassador Stephane Hessel, among others, is calling on the Group of Eight (G8) creditor nations to place the issue of odious and illegitimate debt on the political agenda at this year’s G8 summit.

The “International Call to the G8 leaders on odious debt” petition circulated by the Jubilee Debt Campaign network, states that there is an urgent need to develop a system in which creditors and borrowers can be held mutually accountable and calls on G8 leaders to reassess the claims they hold on developing nations via public parliamentary audit processes.
