Pressure is mounting for Taiwan President Chen Shun-bian to resign: his wife, Wu Shu-chen, and three former presidential aides, face charges of graft and embezzlement; prosecutors say there is evidence to charge the president as well − once he loses the immunity he has while in office.
Investigations against the president and his wife, and an unrelated investigation of their son-in-law, Chao Chien-ming, have dragged the president’s popularity to new lows, reports the U.K.’s Guardian Unlimited [PDFver here] . Earlier this month, prosecutors indicted President Chen’s wife, Wu Shu-chen, and three former presidential aides after an investigation into the handling of a secret diplomatic fund used to sustain Taiwanese
diplomatic efforts abroad. The first lady is expected to be charged with corruption and faking documents in a case involving the misuse of more than Taiwanese $14.8 million, the prosecutor’s office said.
