China’s SinoHydro Corporation (previously known as the China Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Corporation), has signed a contract on the Chalillo dam in Belize. This is the first project of SinoHydro in Latin America.

The Chalillo dam, located on the upper Macal River in western Belize, is 44 meters high, will hold 140,000 cubic meters of reservoir volume, and is installed with 2×3 650 kW generators. The contract cost US$22.15 million. The construction period will take 24 months.

Sinohydro bid the tender on October 31, 2002, and got the first bid. After several rounds of discussion with AMEC in Canada, AMEC proposed including the EPC contract in the original contract for the project’s machinery and generators. Both sides signed the agreement on Feb. 24, 2003. SinoHydro has assigned the 11th Bureau to implement the project. The 11th Bureau is currently undertaking the pre-preparatory work.
