The Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, has directed the Inspector General of Government (IGG) to probe the US$10,000 bribe a Bujagali dam contractor allegedly gave a government official.
In a July 8 letter marked ‘Most Urgent’, Nsibambi said, “You must have heard or read in the newspapers of the allegation that one of the subsidiaries in BEC (Bujagali Engineering Construction) consortium which AES Nile Power has contracted to construct Bujagali Hydro Power Station, gave a bribe of US$10,000 to an official of the Uganda Government.” “This allegation has sparked off a lot of bad publicity against the government efforts to develop the Bujagali Power Station,” said the letter, which The New Vision saw yesterday. “It is important that the Government gets to the root of this allegation.” “This is, therefore, to request you to carry out thorough investigation of the matter and report to me your findings as as soon possible,” he said. Nsibambi added, “I will welcome recommendations you may deem necessary to mitigate the impact of the allegations to the development of the project and for dealing with the culprits, if any.” The letter was copied to President Yoweri Museveni, Vice-President, Dr. Speciosa Kazibwe, ministers: Prof. Mondo Kagonyera and Syda Bbumba. The New Vision first reported about the bribe on July 6, but last week, Veidekke, one of the partners in the Bujagali dam project construction consortium, denied having bribed any Ugandan official.
