The world’s largest parrot is in the middle of a controversy in a small Central American country. It pits a Newfoundland based multi-national corporation against environmentalists. Fortis wants to build a dam in Belize to generate hydro-electric power. It is the majority owner of the country’s electrical company. Environmentalists say the dam will wipe out the habitat of several endangered species, including the Scarlet Macaw. But Fortis and the government of Belize say the environmentalists are jumping the gun. The debate has become personal and nasty at times. CBC reporter Stephen Pudidcombe recently visited Belize to look into the controversy.
