Work on the construction of seven new electric power plants with a combined capacity of 2,230 MW reported to start in the immediate future to early next year.
Text of report by Vietnamese radio web site on 11 April Mr Dao Van Hung, general director of the Vietnam Electricity Authority VEA said recently that work on the construction of seven new electric power plants with a combined capacity of 2,230 MW would start in the immediate future to early next year. These include three hydroelectric power plants of Dai Ninh with a capacity of 300 MW in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, the Sesan-3 with a capacity of 300 MW in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai, and the Rao Quan with a capacity of 70 MW, in central Quang Tri Province. The remainder are thermoelectric power plants: Phu My 4 with a capacity of 450 MW and add-on combine cycle power plant Phu My
2. 1 with a capacity of 160 MW in Ba Ria-Vung Tau southern province, Uong Bi with a capacity of 300 MW, in the northern province of Quang Ninh, and O Mon with a capacity of 600 MW in the southern province of Can Tho. As of the end of 2000, Vietnam had 13 large power plants, including seven thermoelectric power plants and six hydroelectric power plants, with a combined capacity of 5,500 MW and an annual output of 22-23bn kWh. In the first three months of 2001, the electricity sector produced more than 6.8bn kWh, a year-on-year increase of 12.6 per cent. It plans to generate 30bn kWh this year.
