China completes dam of world’s largest hydroelectric project

(March 10, 2000) ‘Many people have known something is wrong with the project, but few have dared to speak up,’ high-profile dam opponent Dai Qing wrote on Three Gorges Probe.

Beijing: China finished building the Three Gorges dam across the Yangtze River on Saturday, a key milestone for the world’s largest hydroelectric project. … While proponents expect increased electricity generation and improved flood control, opponents see environmental damage, a ruined archaeological heritage and misery for local residents. “In my view, building the Three Gorges dam is a ridiculous and evil farce,” high-profile dam opponent Dai Qing wrote on Three Gorges Probe, an online news service run by Probe International, a Canadian think tank. “Many people have known something is wrong with the project, but few have dared to speak up.”
